Miss Ellen Ruth Levy: Paintings & Photographs
Miss Ellen Ruth Levy is a multifaceted visual artist whose paintings and photographs express a lifelong fascination with and joy of dance

Whether capturing the vitality and constant motion of city life in a photograph, or portraying dance-like gestures in abstract expressionist-inspired oil paintings, Levy’s work carries within it a graceful momentum, as if her visual vocabulary were a pas de deux, with the viewer participating.

There is an unbridled joy expressed in the images that transports the viewer to that space where one is dancing as if no one else is watching.

To dance, to move fluidly through space while expressing joy in the movement itself,  to capture in static paint or a photographic print the vibration of a life force that is turning and leaping—this is the artwork of Miss Ellen Ruth Levy.

Resume
Miss Ellen Ruth Levy began studying dance as a young teenager and discovered photography in her early 20s. After working as an assistant to the renowned photographer of motion Phillip Leonian, her career went on to encompass the design and creation
Accessories including belts, jewelry, lamps, textiles, hand painted silks, and handmade papers.  She created custom-designed bags with an emphasis on environmental consciousness for Aveda, Robert Simmons, and Lifethyme Market.

In the early 80s Levy and her love of dance began to inform her visual art through gestural drawings and movement-inspired expressionist paintings and photography. “It’s all about movement, all about dance,” she says.

Levy’s work has been exhibited at the National Arts Club, the NYC Small Works Show, the Greenport Maritime Museum, StellaArt Paris, Gallery Three Zero, and the Bodley Gallery, among others. Her work is in the collections of Revlon, Inc., the Weissman Institute, and the Port Authority of New York.
